A wife began suspecting her husband after he kept arriving home late from work and asked his assistant to spy on him. But when she finally discovered what her husband was hiding from her, she was taken aback.
Jess Miles was delighted with her married life. She had a loving husband, an adorable seven-year-old son, and a beautiful home in a lovely neighborhood. Besides, although both she and her husband, Victor Miles, were working, they never failed to make time for their family.
On weekends, they’d usually go fishing or watch movies and enjoy their time to the fullest. But lately, Victor didn’t seem as enthusiastic as before when it came to spending time with the family. Moreover, he often returned late from work, and whenever Jess tried to ask him what took him so long, he’d reply coldly that he had a lot of work and head to bed.
Initially, Jess believed whatever he said. Since he was the general manager at his company, it was natural that he could have been burdened with a lot of work.
But as time passed, Victor began arriving home even later; sometimes, it would be early in the morning. Yes, Jess was an understanding wife, but this entire late thing had started bothering her. So, one day, she decided to confront Victor about it.
She went straight to Victor while he was getting ready for work and asked in a firm tone, “Victor, I understand you’ve been swamped with work recently, but you’re coming home too late these days. What do you think our child will learn if he sees his dad like this?”.
“Well, he’ll learn to prioritize his work. Don’t you think that’s great?” Victor replied as he adjusted his tie in front of the mirror.
Are you serious?! Don’t you think he’ll suspect his dad is up to something wrong? Which family man comes home so late?” Jess questioned, her hands folded and her voice solemn now.
“Honey, I can’t explain everything to you. Would you please get the breakfast fast? I’m getting late,” Victor said and left the room.
Jess stood there stunned. She didn’t expect Victor to avoid the topic and walk away. But Jess wasn’t ready to give up; she was determined to find out what her husband was up to and came up with a plan soon.
“Hi, Lizy. Jess, here. I wanted to ask you a favor,” Jess said as she placed a call to Victor’s assistant, Lizy, the following day.
“Sure, ma’am. Let me know what I can do for you,” Lizy replied.
“Well, you might find it strange, but I’d want you to keep a close eye on my husband. He constantly stays late at work and does not tell me much. Please keep me updated on who he meets and where he goes every day.”
Lizy was shocked. “Ma’am…what? I mean, are you serious? I don’t think I would want to do something like that. Mr. Miles is a nice man, ma’am. Why would you even ask that?”
“Please, Lizy. Just do it for once. I’m requesting you. Ok, let’s do it this way. If you do this for me, I’ll get your salary doubled,” Jess quickly replied.
“Ma’am, but still…” Lizy was about to finish her sentence when Jess interrupted. “Come on, Lizy. You’re a woman, after all. Suppose you were in my situation, will you still refuse me?” Jess said in an emotional voice.
At this point, Lizy couldn’t refuse her. There’s this thing with women, the moment someone tells them a story in an empathetic manner, their hearts melt. So, Lizy finally agreed to Jess’s request. “Sure, ma’am. I’ll do it, but Mr. Miles shouldn’t find out about this deal.”
“Don’t worry. It will stay between us.” Jess promised her.
After asking Lizy to spy on her husband, Jess felt a bit relieved. However, the things that had happened in the past few days were not getting out of her head. So she decided to skip work that day and keep herself occupied with housework.
She went to the laundry room and began loading the washing machine with clothes. Suddenly, a piece of paper fell from Victor’s shirt pocket.
When she picked it up, she saw it had a contact number under the name Lauren. She quickly called Lizy and asked if it belonged to one of their employees.
“No, ma’am. Lauren isn’t our employee. But…”
“But what, Lizy? Tell me fast. I’m worried, ” Jess said in a shaking voice.
“This lady often visits Mr. Miles during lunch hours. At first, I thought she was a family member, but when I asked him, he said he’s working on a special project with her and warned me not to tell anybody about her.”
Jess’s heart sank. Still, she couldn’t convince herself that Victor was cheating on her. So that day, when Victor returned from home, she asked him if he knew someone named Lauren. But Victor flatly rebuffed her and said he didn’t know anyone with that name.
At this point, Jess was devastated. After dinner, she sat alone on the balcony crying for hours, thinking how Victor’s one wrong step had ruined their entire life. They had a seven-year-old son to look after. What would he think of his father if he found out his dad has an affair with another woman?
However, Jess knew that one day she would have to tell the truth to her son. So, she decided to put everything to an end by going to Victor’s workplace and catching him red-handed.
The next afternoon, she hired a cab and headed straight to Victor’s office. On the way, she called Lizy and asked her to meet her at the front desk.
When Jess arrived at the office, her heart started beating faster. She knew this day could be the end of everything, the end of her happy married life, and the end of her son’s relationship with his father. But she was determined to expose Victor, so she gathered courage and walked towards his room.
Suddenly, she heard a female voice laughing loudly. Jess’s eyes welled up with tears, and she stormed into the room. Victor was bent over the table with the woman next to him.
“What the hell, Victor? How could you cheat on me? Didn’t you think about our son once?” Jess yelled at the top of her voice.
“Honey, please stop crying. You’re misunderstanding this. This is not…” Victor was about to complete his sentence when Jess interrupted. “Misunderstanding? How do you still have the audacity to say that? I am not blind, Victor. I can see what you’re up to.”
“Honey, please. Come here.” He held Jess’s hand and made her sit on a chair.
“Please have some water. Then I’ll explain everything,” Victor said calmly.
“I don’t want anything. Answer me, why did you cheat?” Jess coldly replied.
“I’m not lying to you, honey. This woman …. her name is Laura. She’s a professional architect and the designer for our new home. I didn’t tell you about this before because it was a surprise gift for our anniversary.”
Meanwhile, Laura introduced herself to Jess. “It’s nice to meet you finally. Mr. Miles keeps talking about you all the time. You’re quite fortunate to have such a wonderful husband. He cares a lot about you.”
Jess’s eyes welled up with tears again. “I’m sorry to both of you. I shouldn’t have done this. I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay, Jess. I love you. Come here.” Jess leaned over, and Victor hugged her tightly.
What can we learn from this story?
- Overthinking can lead to problems that weren’t even there in the first place. Because Lizy informed Jess Victor was working on a project with a woman he didn’t want anyone to know about, Jess assumed Victor was cheating.
- Don’t judge a book by its cover. When Jess saw Victor lean over the table with Laura sitting beside him, she quickly and wrongly assumed they were having an affair.
