South African rapper Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes was remembered yesterday at his memorial service as a talented musician, a loving father, and a loyal friend. However, it was his relationship with Nadia Nakai that stole the show. During the service, close friends revealed that AKA was planning to propose to Nakai on Valentine’s Day.
“Funny thing is they have known each other for more than 10 years, and at one point, he mentored her for a project. But the love only came when he was in a dark place and needed her the most,” a close friend of the couple told Zimoja Lezinto.
Nadia Nakai was AKA’s “saving grace”, according to Yanga Chief, who gave a speech at the memorial service. “To Nadia, the first time I asked Kiernan how was your relationship going, he did not hesitate to tell me, ‘Bra, this is it for me. Nadia saved my life.’ I thank you for loving my bru and bringing back to him after we thought we had lost him the first time. He loved you so much,” he said.
Another close friend told the publication that AKA was ready to settle down this year with Nakai. “She supported him. Took the late-night calls when he was crying, and she was there for him. She was the one. He was planning to propose this year. He was a hopeless romantic, and I am sure by Valentine’s Day, it would have been done,” the friend said.
AKA and Nakai recently returned from their first international trip together to the United States. They had been dating for a short time, but their love story was one for the books. “Although he had dated three other famous ladies before Nakia, reportedly he was too head over heels with Nakai,” the publication reported.
While AKA’s funeral was underway with only family, friends, and close acquaintances in attendance, the masses paid tribute to him on social media. Fans and fellow artists shared their condolences and memories of the late rapper, who died at the age of 33 in a tragic shooting.
AKA’s death sent shockwaves through the South African music industry and beyond. He was a pioneer of the country’s hip-hop scene, having released several critically acclaimed albums, won numerous awards, and collaborated with international artists.
Yesterday, AKA was laid to rest in a secluded venue where all the leaders, heroes, and heroines of South African society are rested. His legacy will live on through his music, his fans, and his loved ones. And while he may not have had the chance to propose to Nakai on Valentine’s Day, his love for her and the memories they shared will continue to inspire many.
