APC Running Mate: Why We’re Not Comfortable With Northern Christian, By Arewa Leaders

Some leaders in the Northern part of the country have given reasons a Christian from the region could not be chosen as the running mate to the Presidential Candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to a leading monarch in Niger State, who spoke exclusively with Saturday Telegraph recently, the reason for this is premised on what he (the traditional ruler) referred to as the ‘detachment’ of Christian elite from the mainstream politics of the region.

The choice of a former Borno State Governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, caused a lot of uproar as Christians in the country, particularly in the North, have been up in arms against the choice because of the same faith the ticket presented. Responding to the controversy generated, leaders of the APC stated that the decision was more of political expediency rather than a deliberate slight on the Christian community in the country.

Commenting on the development in a chat with our correspondent in Abuja recently, the prominent traditionalist, who pleaded not to be named so as not to further inflame the passion already generated, blamed the development on Northern Christian leaders. “How do you expect us to trust them when all our Christian brothers and sisters would prefer to go to the South for solutions to their problems rather than sitwith us (in the North) to discuss the problems?.

That is the crux of the matter,” said the monarch who clearly spoke the mind of the North. “This wasn’t the situation during the lifetime of the former leader of the North, the late Sir Ahmadu Bello, who tried all he could to unite the region. If our Christian brothers and sisters had kept faith with the dream and vision of the late Premier of the North, possibly this kind of issue couldn’t have arisen at all,” he said.

If he is trully truthful before his God, he won’t go anonymous. God owns the state, he should watch how He will shuffle the deck. If you are taking over government, build the country not destroy. Niger was did great in the hands of christain leaders, you took over and now it’s a mess. Until a Gbagyi man led a state like Niger state nothing good will come from any leadership, the ancestors do not recognize them.

I am bold to that the traditional ruler is economical with the truth. As a young man born in the late sixties, I saw what I could call a north that did not discrinate against it’s people, but little by little, religion and ethnicity became a tool for political manipulation and by extension, oppresion, unlike the Sardauna era, where, justice, equity and fairness was the watch ward for all manner of people, without the biases and sentiments we have today. We must first of all see ourselves equal human beings before our creator. We must also accept the fact that we are religiously and culturally different, but geographically one and there is nothing anybody can do about that, because God did not need to consult any body to do that. Religion is the thing of the heart and is personal. The truth be told injustice, lack of equity is the root cause of disunity in the north.

This so called monarch lacks the moral right and just mind to support what he’s saying.
All the Core North especially the Fulani and Hausa who are slaves of the Fulani hate Northern Christians with passion on the basis of religion. The northern Christians understand the deceitful minds of Fulani and their Hausa slaves.
Because the northern Christians question lslam and it’s discriminatory tendencies , hence the hate.
Islam teaches that non Muslims should never be allowed to rule over Muslims
Because the Fulani could not conquer the northern christian areas during the uthman Dan Fodio jihad,it still pains them that up till today the northern Christians are the obstacle to their Islamization agenda.
This is the truth and the know it, hence the opposition to allowing northern Christians the opportunity to occupy sensitive Government positions.
