As I was growing up, I often heard people say things about successful women who weren’t married. They’d whisper things like, “She has money but no husband. Men are scared to talk to her,” or “She’s successful but can’t keep a man.
Her success makes her forget she’s a woman,” and even, “She doesn’t have kids yet. She must be really lonely.” At first, I didn’t pay much attention to these comments.
But now, when I hear them, I worry they might say the same things about me someday. I’m only twenty-one, not successful yet, and I haven’t reached the age when people think I should settle down and have children. But based on my life right now, I think I might stay single forever.
