A doctor romanced a poor cleaner in secret and later dumped her for another woman. Not long after, karma reached him.
When Olivia’s mother became ill, she had to put her studies on hold for a while and work hard to support them.
However, due to a lack of work experience and an incomplete degree, the only job Olivia could manage to get was that of a cleaner at the city hospital. The job didn’t pay her much, but she could at least afford her mother’s medications and shelter for themselves.
When Olivia joined the hospital, she met a young doctor named Lucas on her first day. He was handsome and charming, and Olivia couldn’t take her gaze away when she saw him for the first time. To her surprise, Lucas noticed her too and smiled at her. Olivia liked Lucas so much that she fell head over heels in love with him at first sight.
After a few days, Olivia started going to the hospital early and waited until Lucas was done with his shift. She’d finish her work quickly and then wait for him to come out of his clinic, hoping to catch a glimpse of the handsome man.
However, one day, while she was hiding behind a wall and looking at Lucas, he caught her. “Hey, you!” he shouted from outside his clinic.
Scared, Olivia turned around and quickened her steps, but Lucas stopped her. “Hey, wait! You are Olivia … Olivia Mathew, right?”
“Yes,” Olivia replied quietly. “I didn’t think anyone would recognize me here. After all, I’m just a cleaner.”
Lucas laughed. “Well, your name badge says that, so I don’t think it’ll be difficult for others to figure out your name.”
Olivia’s cheeks flushed. She realized she’d just made a fool of herself. Every member of the hospital staff wears a name badge, Olivia! What’s wrong with you? She cursed her stupidity.
“Anyway, I’m Dr. Lucas Smith. I work as a surgeon here,” Lucas introduced himself.
“Nice to meet you, Dr. Smith,” Olivia replied shyly.
“By the way, if it’s okay with you, I’d like to inquire as to why you’ve been staring at me for the past few days. And there’s no need for you to lie because I know you did it!” Lucas remarked.
“No, it’s nothing… It’s just that…” Before Olivia could say anything, Lucas interrupted her.
“Actually, do you mind joining me for dinner tonight? I think it’s better to sit somewhere and talk, preferably not in the hospital!” Olivia simply nodded her head.
Olivia and Lucas went out together for the first time that night, but it became commonplace soon after. They would often leave the hospital at the same time after work and meet at a restaurant to talk about everything: their lives, their work, Olivia’s sick mother, and so on.
One night, they were sitting by a lake after a romantic dinner when Lucas kissed Olivia gently and said, “I like you too much, Olivia. I want to be with you forever.”
Olivia blushed a little. “I like you too, Lucas. In fact, I don’t know how to put it, but I have never felt for anyone the way I feel for you.”
“But Olivia, I’m afraid we’ll have to keep our relationship a secret,” Lucas remarked.
Olivia was perplexed. “But why? What’s the harm in dating each other openly?”
“Well, as you know, we work at the same place, and I’m afraid we’ll have problems if anyone finds out about our relationship.”
Workplace issues? Seriously? Olivia had a hard time believing the reason. However, she didn’t ask anything further and just agreed to whatever Lucas said.
The next day, Olivia was sitting alone in the cafeteria wondering why Lucas would have wanted to keep it a secret. But then, a voice interrupted her. “Do you mind if I sit here?
Olivia looked up and saw that it was a hospital orderly. The badge on his uniform read, “Nathan Hill.” Olivia nodded, and Nathan took a seat.
“Why do you look so lost? Is everything okay?” he asked her. Olivia said she was worried about her mother’s declining health and nothing else.
After that, they sat and talked for a while, and Olivia learned that Nathan, too, had a tragic story as he had to drop out of college to care for his siblings after his parents died in a car accident. Since then, Olivia and Nathan formed a friendship.
One evening, when Lucas asked Olivia to dinner, she declined, stating she had to study because she was planning on finishing her degree and going for higher studies. Lucas was enraged because he had frequently observed her studying with Nathan, but he didn’t tell her anything that evening.
The next day, Lucas arrived at the hospital, hand in hand with a female surgeon. He noticed Olivia but didn’t even bother to greet her. When Olivia saw them together, she was upset, so she confronted Lucas after her shift that day.
“You wanted our relationship to be private, but now you’re out in public holding the hand of a woman?! How do you explain that, Lucas?”
“She’s my fiancée, Olivia! We’re getting married next month! Her name is Claire,” Lucas said.
Olivia glared at him. “Is this a joke, Lucas? Fiancée?! Seriously?!”
Lucas laughed. “Oh, Olivia, you’re too naive, aren’t you?”
“I’m serious, Lucas! Is that why you kept our relationship a secret?”
Lucas smirked. “Obviously not, Olivia. Claire and I have only been dating for a week. I kept our affair secret because I didn’t want to embarrass myself by telling everyone that I am—oops, I was—dating a CLEANER!.
Olivia was stunned. “Lucas?!”
“Why are you so shocked, honey? Did you think I was going to marry you?” Lucas began laughing. “I’m giving you a piece of friendly advice, Olivia. Don’t make a fool of yourself and concentrate on your career and your new friend, okay?”
Olivia couldn’t believe her ears. She was devastated when she learned that Lucas had dumped her for another woman. However, her problems weren’t over yet.
That night, when she was about to leave work, one of her neighbors called to inform her that her mother passed away. Olivia sank to the ground, crying. Thankfully, Nathan was at the hospital at the time, and he helped her.
Olivia was severely traumatized after her mother passed away, so Nathan took leave from work for a while to just look after her. Thanks to him, she began to recover quickly and was able to get back on her feet and return to work.
After Olivia’s recovery, she and Nathan worked hard and focused on their studies, and the following year, they both graduated from university. But that was only the beginning for
Soon, Nathan and Olivia joined a large hospital where they worked as doctors for a few years before opening their own hospital. However, because the hospital was still new, they were looking for employees, especially a chief surgeon for a new wing. So they started the interviews right away.
When the first interviewee entered, Olivia was stunned. It was Lucas! He performed well in the interview, so Olivia decided to hire him. However, Lucas had other plans too. When he learned he was hired, he came to the hospital with a bouquet of flowers to propose to her.
Will you marry me, Olivia? Claire and I divorced a long time ago because I realized I only loved you,” he told Olivia.
But Olivia knew better this time. She smiled at him and gave him ‘friendly’ advice. “It’s best if you don’t do such things, Dr. Smith, otherwise, you’ll be fired. Moreover, I’m engaged, and I’m getting married this month to Nathan—remember the guy you labeled as ‘my friend?’ So, please behave. I don’t think you should be talking to someone’s fiancée like that!”
What can we learn from this story?
You can’t avoid karma. Lucas pretended to love Olivia and later dumped her for another woman. A few years later, the tables were turned.
Never make a snap judgment about someone based on their appearance. The way Lucas judged Olivia just because she was a cleaner wasn’t right at all.
