Shortly after the release of Special Counsel John Durham’s report on the FBI’s investigation into potential ties between Russia and Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, former President Trump took to his Truth Social account to express his view of vindication.
Trump enthusiastically shared his reaction, stating that the extensive research conducted by Durham concluded that the FBI should never have initiated the Trump-Russia Probe. According to Trump, this confirms that the American public was deceived, much like what he believes is happening currently by those who oppose the progress and success of America.
As a special counsel appointed by Trump’s Attorney General Bill Barr, Durham’s report heavily criticizes the FBI’s handling of the Trump-Russia probe. The report, spanning over 300 pages, points out various shortcomings and highlights how the FBI failed to adhere to the law. However, Durham did not recommend significant changes to the Department of Justice (DOJ) or the bureau’s policies.
The report emphasizes the importance of the DOJ and FBI recognizing their lack of analytical rigor, apparent confirmation bias, and over-reliance on information from individuals associated with political opponents. These factors, according to the report, hindered investigators from adequately considering alternative hypotheses and led them to act without the necessary objectivity or restraint when pursuing allegations of collusion or conspiracy between a U.S. political campaign and a foreign power.
Conservatives have taken to social media to claim that Trump has been “exonerated” and assert that he was a victim of a “weaponized” DOJ and FBI. Some critics, such as The Intercept, have described Durham as “Trump’s answer to Robert Mueller,” suggesting that he used the criminal justice system for political gain rather than to seek the truth. It’s worth noting that Attorney General Barr’s summary of the 2019 Mueller report found no evidence of a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia, and Mueller did not reach a conclusive determination on whether Trump obstructed justice.
The release of Durham’s report has sparked debates and further divided opinions on the matter, with Trump supporters seeing it as confirmation of their beliefs while others raise questions about the motivations and objectivity of the investigation. The aftermath of this report will likely continue to fuel discussions and analysis of the FBI’s actions during the Trump-Russia probe, as well as their implications for future investigations and the political landscape.
The Durham Report has dropped and the report concludes that the FBI never should have launched the Trump-Russia probe in the first place. The report EXONERATES Donald Trump once and for all. The American people were scammed by an FBI/DOJ that has been weaponized against… pic.twitter.com/LMhNjXm0VC
