Melaye’s comments come in the wake of a controversial statement by Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle that residents should buy guns in order to defend themselves when terrorists attack.
Former Kogi Lawmaker, Dino Melaye has lauded calls to arm citizens following the worsening insecurity and incessant attacks by gunmen in worship centres.
Melaye posted to Twitter a video of the West Freeway Church of Christ shooting that took place on December 29, 2019, in White Settlement, Texas, United States.
Two people in the congregation were killed before the gunman was fatally shot by Jack Wilson, 71, a volunteer security team member. The attack was live-streamed, as are all services at the church.
Melaye, who represented Kogi West at the Senate between 2015 to 2019, stressed that the worshippers did not wait for Jesus to save them.
“Gunmen attacked church during service in USA, but before you know it, the worshippers fired back and none of these gunmen escaped. They do not wait for Jesus to fight for them,” he tweeted.

Governor Matewalle’s call was timely and good, however the problem of personal gun in the hands of the untrained and uninformed has it’s consequences. It’s time in the real sense to allow State Police in this country. Where the state police exist the lack of personnel being experienced now will be a thing of the past, and the insecurity that seems unsurmountable will be resolved.
Congratulation as I utilized this opportunity to welcome myself to this page.l
