A mother neglects her child to live an extravagant life as a single woman. Karma strikes her back with a passion.
Throughout her life, Edith worked hard and became pretty successful. So, her daughter, Eliana, never missed out on anything and had more privilege than most of her friends. While some people would use that to advance their lives, Eliana was not interested.
Edith was at the end of her rope with her daughter. She didn’t want to study for her lessons and had no interest in going to college. “You need to apply to some universities. How will you have a future without an education?” she told Eliana.
“Mother, I don’t need to go to college or anything. I’ll inherit your money as your only daughter, and I’m also gorgeous, which means that many rich men will be at my feet,” Eliana replied.
“That’s not how it works. If you don’t work harder, I won’t give you my money,” Edith continued.
“Don’t be ridiculous. Who would you give your money to then? But still, when I find a handsome, rich husband, your money won’t matter much,” her daughter said as she walked away.
No matter what Edith did, Eliana wouldn’t work harder. She barely graduated high school with the worst grades in her class because she was more interested in dating the rich boys in the area.
However, all those boys were too young and immature to want anything serious, and Eliana knew it. As soon as she turned 18, she started going to clubs and spending her substantial allowance shopping around.
Edith had to put a stop to her daughter’s greediness before it was too late. “I’m cutting you off! You won’t get another dime out of me until you start studying again,” she said.
“I don’t need your money, you fat cow!” Eliana insulted her. She didn’t need any help from her mother and thought she could continue living the same way. But her funds ran out quickly.
Luckily, she had a plan. There were all kinds of rich men in the clubs she frequented. It would be easy to get them to buy her drinks and maybe more. On one of those nights, Eliana met Dylan, a 30-year-old businessman from New York City.
He was exactly what she needed; a rich, older man to give her everything. Dylan seemed completely smitten and asked her to move with him to NYC. He promised she would never have to work and their lives would be brilliant.
“You cannot go with a stranger to another city! You don’t know this man,” Edith pleaded with her daughter as Eliana packed her suitcase to leave.
“Mother, I’m leaving whether you like it or not. I told you that I wouldn’t need your money or go to some stupid college to have a wonderful life,” Eliana replied.
Although Edith continued begging her to stay, Eliana left the house and got in a cab with Dylan to start her new life. Edith would not hear one word of her daughter until two years later when she showed up on her doorstep.
“Eliana, what are you doing here?” Edith asked. At first, Eliana was hesitant to answer. She had tears streaming down her face and was heavily pregnant at the time as well.
“I’m so sorry, mother. You were right about that idiot. He kicked me out of his house because he didn’t want to be a father,” Eliana cried as she walked into her childhood home.
“Oh, honey. I don’t want to say I told you so, and you’re here now. That’s all that matters,” her mother said as she hugged Eliana fiercely. “I missed you so much while you were gone.”
Sometimes, you have to let children learn the harshest lessons on their own. It seemed that Eliana had changed completely because of her pregnancy, and mother and daughter bonded while waiting for the baby. But it was all for show…
Eliana had no intention of staying in her childhood home and becoming the hardworking mother Edith wanted her to be. One night, she stole her mother’s priceless jewelry and ran away for good, leaving the baby behind.
Years passed while Edith raised her grandson, Alex, to be much better than his mother and was proud when Alex did well in school. However, she was not getting any younger and soon became too sick.
“Grammy, are you alright?” 11-year-old Alex asked one day after discovering his grandmother breathing heavily on the couch.
“Sweetheart, I think you need to call 911,” Edith answered in the calmest voice possible. Sadly, Edith did not make it back from the hospital that day, and that’s how Eliana waltzed into his life for the first time since he was a baby.
“Ha! My mother did not leave a will. So, now this is my house. I’ll let you live here if you don’t bother me,” Eliana said to Alex as she moved her stuff in a few days later.
Edith did not say much about Alex’s mother while growing up, but the smart boy learned quickly that she was not a great person. Eliana started bringing men over all the time.
When they asked about Alex, she would say he was an orphan instead of her son. Alex couldn’t even walk around the house without being yelled at.
“Get back to your room! I don’t want you around! I have guests coming over!” she screamed at him.
That’s how he decided to run away. Alex slept beneath the bleachers of his school’s football field, and Eliana barely noticed his absence. But the boy would not survive long like that…
Luckily, he was discovered by the school janitor, a lovely lady named Agatha. She gave him food and took him to social services. Eventually, Alex started living in Agatha’s house, and later, she became his legal guardian.
One day, a lawyer sent a letter to Agatha, revealing that Edith had left a will on a safety deposit box in the bank. The truth is that she had left everything to Alex, but her parent or guardian was in charge of the money until his 18th birthday.
Since Eliana didn’t have custody of her child, she lost everything, including the house and her mother’s money. She picked up her things and walked out in a huff. That’s the last time Alex saw her.
Meanwhile, he and Agatha moved to his old home. She never touched a penny of his inheritance, even after adopting him formally, and despite being abandoned as a baby, he was surrounded by love.
What can we learn from this story?
1. Blood doesn’t make you family. Alex’s mother abandoned him, while a stranger took him in without question or expectations.
2. Greediness leads to nothing. Eliana was not kind to her mother and abandoned her own baby in the search for more money. She was left with nothing in the end.
