A woman couldn’t wait to welcome her little one into the world. When the fateful day finally arrived and the mother first laid eyes on her daughter, her happiness was soon overshadowed by confusion and concern for her baby girl’s safety.
Every child is special and extraordinarily talented. Children who grow up in a safe and loving environment might find it relatively easier to identify their strengths and personality traits early on.
Sadly, children deprived of a caring family might face difficulty embracing themselves and accepting their unique attributes. However, the story we’re sharing today revolves around the significance of nurturing little ones so they grow up feeling loved, accepted, and understood.
Nicole Lucas Hall and Shannon Owen Hall were a lovely couple and parents to their adorable boy, Asher. Their son was still a toddler when they received other delightful news — they were pregnant with their second child.
In 2021, the Halls welcomed a little angel, Asher’s baby sister Winry, into their lives. They were thrilled and couldn’t wait to hold their daughter and shower her with tender love and care.
Like any new mom, Nicole waited eagerly to cradle her little princess, but when she finally saw her daughter for the first time, her emotions were far different than what she had expected.
The Halls have reportedly connected to people like them in their social media mission of sharing their beautiful journey with others and discussing CMN and Winry’s life.
HOLDING HER LITTLE PRINCESS
The moment the second-time mother held her daughter, she noticed something unusual. Nicole recalled that her initial thoughts after seeing little Winry were confusion and concern for her daughter’s safety.
It turned out that the little girl was born with an extremely rare birthmark that Nicole had never heard of or seen before. When asked how she felt after seeing Winry for the first time, Nicole told Good Morning America:
“When they first handed her [Winry] to me, I thought it was a bruise. It was then quickly apparent to my husband and I that it was not a bruise. And like the name, I thought it looked a lot like a mole.”
The mother later learned that Winry was born with rare congenital melanocytic nevi or CMN that covered a fourth of her face and is said to have an occurrence rate of around one in 50,000 births.
Per the National Organization for Rare Diseases report by Dr. Harper Price of Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Dr. Heather Etchevers of Marseille Medical Genetics, CMN is characterized by light brown to black patches and can cover nearly any body part.
A RARE BEAUTY
The Halls said they became apprehensive, but their fears diminished when they talked to the doctors. Medical experts reassured the couple that the birthmark did not pose any severe health risks to Winry.
Nicole told Bright Side that it took her a long time to relax and celebrate Winry’s arrival and ensure she was healthy, happy, and confident. The Halls revealed that their son, Asher, quickly embraced his role as Winry’s older brother.
BEST FRIEND AND PROTECTOR
The mother-of-two expressed that her boy is unaware that there’s something different about his baby sister. She added that although he knew she had a birthmark on her face, it wasn’t more different to him than having distinct eye colors.
Nicole further described that her sweet boy sometimes felt jealous and craved undivided “mom time,” but she hoped he would become Winry’s best buddy and protector. The Halls have been dedicated to raising their little girl right by helping her embrace her uniqueness.
Even though Nicole and Shannon are teaching their daughter to become a warrior and be kind, they are sometimes concerned about how the world might perceive their bundle of joy.
For this reason, Nicole has been raising awareness about CMN on social media. She further revealed:
“For a lot of people, this is the first time seeing a birthmark like hers and that’s part of why I enjoy sharing. This is a good conversation for parents to see kids have differences, or for those parents who do have a kid that looks like Winry to see their child represented.”
BEAUTIFUL INSIDE OUT
According to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Winry’s diagnosis might expose her to an increased risk of developing melanoma. But Nicole admitted she worried more about her daughter facing direct criticism when she got older.
Moreover, Nicole said she was cautious about Winry’s health and happiness and had regular dermatology appointments. She also gushed about her little one’s character. Nicole described:
“She just radiates joy. She is just the happiest baby I have ever seen. She’s a big talker already. We haven’t got a whole lot of words out, but she tells you like it is and she’s already getting a little bit of sassiness, so I think we’re gonna have a lot on our hands.”
The Halls have reportedly connected to people like them in their social media mission to share their beautiful journey with others and discuss CMN and Winry’s life.
Despite the Halls smothering their little angel with constant love and care, they have reportedly faced criticism, hostility, and unwelcoming glances from people. Regardless, Nicole and Shannon said they have remained calm in unpleasant situations.
The doting mother shared that she and her husband have kept most of their social media responses positive and informative, hoping to educate people on CMN. But to rude and hateful comments, Nicole said she and Shannon responded with humor.
The Halls admitted to feeling happy and contented with the generally overwhelming response of people eager to learn about Winry.
A POWERFUL MESSAGE
The couple shared that their daughter means the world to them, and thanks to her, they’ve felt strong enough to reach out to others and encourage them to celebrate diversity.
With loving parents like Nicole and Shannon and a sweet and protective brother like Asher, we can’t wait to see the wonderful human Winry becomes in the future.
This phenomenal story teaches us that no matter how different our children are, we should always love them and give them the wings to fly and accomplish their goals. Every child needs a loving parent, and we hope all kids grow up in a supportive family.
Doesn’t little Winry radiate pure joy? Indeed, she is a rare beauty, and we send our heartfelt wishes and love to this adorable baby girl. If this story warmed your heart, please share it with your loved ones.
